Presentation Outline: Online communities

"A Rape in Cyberspace" by Julian Dibbell

This reading is mainly about the Bungle Affair happened in an online space known as LambdaMOO and how the online community(LambdaMOO), including the victims of the affair, handled the case. The writer uses the Bungle Affair to bring out issues regarding online communities.

Here is the outline of my presentation:

1) Brief information on the Bungle Affair: a cyberrape performed by a player called Mr. Bungle

2) The Bungle case highlights issues regarding virtual community:

->the boundaries between real-life and virtual reality (virtual offense = real crime?)

->the regulation of online spaces

The reading leads us to think about issues of regulation within virtual worlds and also the boundary between real-life and virtual reality (e.g. what was the real-life legal status of virtual offense?)

  1. I think I have covered the main points of the article and my presentation is comprehensive enough. However, as Wesley commented, it would be better if I can identify the most important point among the main points I found in this article and I should put more emphasis on this most important point I identified.

    Instead of putting an even focus on every main point, maybe I can focus more on the most important point - “the regulation in online spaces”, so that I can have a more in-depth discussion on it. Perhaps I should also put more focus on how different group of people (the wizards, technoliberstarians and anarchists) respond to Mr. Bungle’s offense.

  2. Besides of choosing the readings about the late 80s to early 90s, I think we have made a similar mistake as well! In your today’s presentation, it might be a bit general, without clearly highlighting a main theme. I suggest that you may talk more and in-depth about the “regulation” which has mentioned by the authour in the middle part of the writing. Though the presentation was comprehensive, you did summarize all the points in the reading and very exhaustive, which really helped me to understand this writing easily. Good Job!!!
